US Health Officials Race to Find Source of Growing Parasite Outbreak

Public health officials in the United States are currently managing a significant increase in cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite. According to NPR Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed more than 1,600 cases across 34 states. The situation is evolving rapidly, with health authorities also monitoring an additional 5,100 potential cases that are currently waiting for official confirmation.

This outbreak represents a major shift compared to previous years. Gwen Biggerstaff of the CDC noted that the current number of infections is much higher than what was seen at the same time last year, when only about 250 cases were documented nationwide. While no deaths have been reported, the impact on public health is clear: more than 140 people have been hospitalized due to the severity of their symptoms. The illness affects a wide range of ages, with patients as young as two and as old as 95.

Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal infection, meaning it affects the stomach and intestines. The primary symptom is severe, watery diarrhea. Because the parasite is often linked to contaminated fresh produce, investigators are working hard to identify the exact source. NPR Health reports that previous outbreaks of this nature have been connected to items such as lettuce, bagged salads, fresh herbs like basil and cilantro, and berries. However, officials have not yet confirmed which food item is responsible for the current wave of illness.

In some areas, the response has been immediate. There are reports that certain restaurant locations, including some Taco Bell branches in Michigan, have stopped serving lettuce and other fresh produce as a safety precaution. Donald Prater, the acting deputy commissioner for food at the FDA, confirmed that federal investigators are aware of the reports regarding lettuce in Michigan. He stated that the agency is currently conducting a “trace-back” investigation—a process of tracking food items from the store or restaurant back to the farm—to determine if specific produce is the cause of the infections.

Identifying the source of a cyclospora outbreak is notoriously difficult. One major challenge is the time it takes for symptoms to appear. According to NPR Health, it can take up to two weeks after eating contaminated food for a person to become sick. This long delay makes it hard for patients to remember exactly what they ate or where they ate it, which complicates the work of investigators who are interviewing those who have fallen ill.

Another challenge is that testing for this specific parasite is not a routine part of medical care. Dr. Christopher Attaway of the University of Vermont explained that many people who experience stomach issues may not visit a doctor or ask for a specific test. Because of this, many cases go unreported, which leaves health officials with less data to work with. Dr. Attaway noted that if more people with symptoms sought treatment and testing, it would provide investigators with the information needed to find the source of the outbreak more quickly.

Despite the difficulty in finding the cause, there is some good news for those affected. The infection can be treated effectively with antibiotics, which are medicines used to kill bacteria and some parasites. Public health officials are now urging healthcare providers to be more alert and to test patients who show signs of severe diarrhea. By increasing the number of tests, the CDC hopes to gather more information to stop the spread of the parasite.

As the investigation continues, the CDC is using a process called genotyping, which involves analyzing the genetic material of the parasite from stool samples. This helps scientists see if different cases are related to the same source. Investigators have already noticed that cases in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky appear to be connected. While the search for the specific food culprit continues, the public is advised to remain cautious and to consult a doctor if they experience persistent stomach symptoms. For now, the CDC continues its work to identify the source and prevent further illnesses across the country.
