Deadly Drone Strike Hits Shopping Center in Kryvyi Rih

A major shopping center in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih was hit by a series of Russian drone strikes, resulting in at least 15 deaths and leaving over 130 people injured. According to BBC News and Al Jazeera, the attack was carried out in two waves. This method, often called a "double-tap" strike, involves a second attack occurring shortly after the first, specifically targeting the area while emergency workers and rescuers are trying to help victims of the initial blast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack on his hometown as "absolutely cynical and despicable." He noted that the second drone struck the building 30 minutes after the first, suggesting a deliberate attempt to cause more harm to those responding to the emergency. Local officials, including Kryvyi Rih Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul, reported that the drones flew at very low altitudes to avoid detection. Rescue teams from four different regions were sent to the site to search for survivors trapped in the rubble.

Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed that the victims included many children, with 22 children among the over 130 people wounded. Of those injured, 29 people are currently in serious condition. The attack has caused widespread outrage, with many in Ukraine calling it a blatant act of terror. Al Jazeera reported that while it is sometimes difficult to know if a mall was the intended target—as drones can fall in random places if they are intercepted—the video evidence suggests the attack on the shopping center was intentional.

This tragedy in Kryvyi Rih is part of a larger, dangerous increase in violence across the country. On the same day, separate Russian attacks in the Mykolaiv region killed four people, including three children, while two others died in the Kharkiv region. These events follow a major attack on the capital, Kyiv, just one day earlier, where 17 people were killed and over 40 were injured. In that attack, residential buildings, a children's hospital, and a school were damaged.

In recent months, Russia has increased its use of missiles and drones against Ukrainian cities. At the same time, Ukraine has stepped up its own military actions inside Russia. According to BBC News, Ukraine has targeted oil refineries, military airfields, and warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. Kyiv maintains that these are legitimate military targets because they help fund and support Russia’s war efforts. Russia has not provided a public comment regarding the specific strike on the Kryvyi Rih shopping center.

The human cost of the ongoing conflict continues to rise. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that at least 437 civilians were killed and over 2,600 were injured in July alone. This represents the highest monthly civilian death toll since May 2022. As the conflict continues, the international community remains focused on the situation. Countries allied with Ukraine, known as the "coalition of the willing," are scheduled to meet soon to discuss continued support for Kyiv.

Kryvyi Rih remains a city under pressure, located roughly 60 kilometers from the front line. It has been a frequent target throughout the war, which began when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Today, Moscow controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory in the south-east. As the search for survivors continues at the destroyed shopping center, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by civilians living in cities near the fighting. For now, the focus remains on treating the wounded and holding those responsible for the strikes to account, as requested by the Ukrainian government.
