Senate Confirms Todd Blanche as U.S. Attorney General

The United States Senate has officially confirmed Todd Blanche as the new attorney general. The vote, which took place early Saturday morning, was very close at 50-49. This decision places the former personal lawyer of President Donald Trump in charge of the Department of Justice, a massive organization with over 100,000 employees. Blanche has been serving as the acting attorney general since April, but this vote makes his position permanent.

The final result was uncertain until the last moment. While most Republicans supported the president’s choice, two Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—joined all Democrats in voting against him. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana provided the crucial deciding vote. According to BBC News, Cassidy’s choice was closely watched because he has had a difficult relationship with President Trump for several years.

Senator Cassidy explained his decision by saying that while Blanche is not perfect, he is a better choice than an acting official who might not effectively manage the department. Cassidy noted that his vote was not a statement on the president himself, but rather a practical decision about who should lead the department. "The choice is not between perfection and Mr. Blanche," Cassidy said on Friday, as reported by NPR News. "It is between Mr. Blanche and another acting attorney general who may not run the department effectively."

Blanche’s path to confirmation was not easy. He faced significant questions regarding his independence, as he previously acted as Trump’s personal defense lawyer. Many lawmakers were worried that he would treat the Department of Justice like a private law firm for the president rather than an independent agency. Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, argued that the attorney general should be "the people's lawyer" and warned that Blanche’s appointment could be a serious mistake for the country.

During the confirmation process, Blanche had to address concerns about several controversial projects. One major issue was the "Anti-Weaponization Fund," a $1.8 billion plan meant to pay people who claimed the government had been used against them. Critics, including Senator Murkowski, feared the money might be used to help people involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. To gain support, Blanche promised to cancel the fund. He provided a written statement on August 2 confirming that the order for the fund was "rescinded"—meaning it was officially cancelled and would no longer have any effect.

Additionally, the Justice Department clarified rules regarding tax audits for the president and his family. According to NPR News, the department stated that protections from tax audits are limited to President Trump, two of his sons, and the Trump Organization. These protections apply only to past tax returns. This was a change from earlier, more unclear plans that might have protected a larger group of people.

Despite these promises, some senators remained unconvinced. Senator Murkowski stated that the nation needed an attorney general who would "check the worst impulses of this administration." She and other critics expressed concern that Blanche would continue to prioritize the president’s personal agenda, such as seeking revenge against political opponents, rather than acting as a neutral law enforcement officer. Previous attorneys general, including Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr, faced similar pressure from President Trump when they did not fully follow his legal requests.

Following the vote, Blanche expressed his gratitude on the social media platform X. He stated that he was "deeply honored" by the trust the president placed in him. Supporters of the appointment, including Senator Chuck Grassley, were quick to celebrate the result, noting that the department needs a permanent leader to function properly. However, the opposition remains strong. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer criticized the decision, suggesting that Blanche’s history of working for the president makes him an "enabler" of corruption.

As Blanche begins his new role, the country will be watching closely to see how he balances his loyalty to the president with his duty to the law. While he has promised to end certain controversial programs, questions about his independence will likely continue.
