Senate Confirms Todd Blanche as New U.S. Attorney General

Early Saturday morning, the United States Senate voted to confirm Todd Blanche as the new attorney general. The final vote was 50-49, a very narrow margin that highlights the deep divisions in Washington. Blanche, who previously worked as President Trump’s personal lawyer, will now take charge of the Justice Department, an organization with over 100,000 employees. This confirmation marks a significant moment for the administration, as Blanche has been serving in an acting capacity since the president removed the former head of the department, Pam Bondi.

According to NPR News, the path to confirmation was not easy. All Democratic senators voted against Blanche, joined by two Republicans, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski. The nomination only moved forward after Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana decided to support him. Senator Cassidy admitted that he had concerns about Blanche’s judgment, particularly regarding the president’s tax audits and the use of the Justice Department to pursue political rivals. However, Cassidy argued that the alternative was an acting leader who might not manage the department effectively. He stated that the choice was not between perfection and Mr. Blanche, but between Mr. Blanche and a less effective leader.

Much of the debate surrounding the nomination focused on the controversial $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund. This fund was created as part of a legal agreement between the president and the IRS regarding the president’s tax returns. The purpose of the fund was to pay people who claimed the government had been used as a weapon against them. Many lawmakers from both parties were worried about how this money would be used. To secure the necessary support, Blanche promised that the fund would be cancelled. On August 2, he provided a written statement confirming that the order for the fund was officially removed and would have no further effect.

Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas, who supported the nomination, praised Blanche for his willingness to work with Congress to resolve these concerns. Cornyn noted that the Justice Department needs a permanent leader with a strong legal mind. He also suggested that because Blanche has a close relationship with the president, he should be willing to provide honest and difficult advice when it is necessary for the good of the country. This sentiment was echoed by other supporters who believe that a close advisor is exactly what the president needs to navigate complex legal challenges.

In addition to the Anti-Weaponization Fund, the Justice Department issued a second statement on August 2 to clarify rules regarding tax audits. The department explained that protections against tax audits, which were part of the same legal settlement, would only apply to the president, two of his sons, and the Trump Organization. This was a change from earlier concerns that the protections might cover a much larger and unclear group of people. However, some legal experts and members of the opposition party have questioned whether these written promises will hold up in court, as they were not signed by a judge.

Just days earlier, the president signed new executive orders aimed at limiting birthright citizenship for children born to foreign government employees and members of terrorist groups.
