Nintendo Profits Jump After US Tariff Refund

Nintendo has reported a significant jump in profits, as the Japanese game maker’s earnings were helped by a long-awaited refund on trade taxes. According to The Guardian, the company saw profits rise by 53.5% to ¥147.4bn over the three months ending in June. This result was much higher than what experts had predicted. The financial boost comes after the US Supreme Court ruled in February that the “liberation day” trade levies—taxes on goods brought into a country—introduced by the Trump administration were illegal.

This development follows recent reports that the US government has returned $100 billion to various businesses. This amount represents about 60% of the total $165 billion collected under the administration’s earlier trade policies. While the refund provided a major boost to Nintendo’s bottom line, the company’s overall performance was mixed. Nintendo noted that sales of its Switch 2 console, which was released last summer, remained strong. Popular games like Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Star Fox, and Pokémon Pokopia also performed well. However, these successes did not fully make up for an overall drop in sales compared to the same time last year, with total revenue falling by 10% to ¥517.8bn.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against the White House. The company demanded a full refund of the money it spent on tariffs, plus interest. While it appears that a refund has now been received, Nintendo has not confirmed the exact amount. The company also appears to be resisting pressure to pass these savings on to its customers. This has led to legal trouble; last month, Nintendo was hit with a class action lawsuit—a legal case where a group of people sue together—on behalf of customers. The lawsuit claims that Nintendo raised its prices because of the tariffs but then kept the money after receiving the refund.
