President Donald Trump announced this weekend that he has cancelled planned military strikes against Iran. The President stated that he made this decision because he believes a new deal can be reached "rapidly." According to the BBC, the US and Israel had been planning intense bombing campaigns against energy infrastructure in Iran before the President decided to hold off.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Mr. Trump claimed that Iran and other countries in the Middle East had asked him to stop the attacks. He suggested that the "perimeters" of a deal had already been agreed upon. The President said that cancelling the strikes would be for the benefit of the world and for the future of a successful Iran. Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Mr. Trump confirmed that new talks between the two nations were expected to begin on Monday.

The proposed agreement would focus on two major issues: ending Iran’s nuclear program and ensuring the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a vital waterway for global oil shipments. Because these countries are closer to Iran, they fear that if the US carries out large-scale attacks on Iranian energy sites, Tehran might retaliate by attacking their own critical infrastructure, such as water desalination plants.
