Trump Cancels Planned Iran Strikes, Citing Potential for Rapid Deal

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he has cancelled planned military strikes against Iran. The President stated that he made this decision because he expects a deal to be reached "rapidly" with the country. According to reports from BBC News, the U.S. and Israel had been planning intense strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure, such as oil refineries and power plants, throughout the weekend.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump claimed that he was asked by Iran and other countries in the Middle East to "hold off" on any attack. He stated that the "perimeters" of a deal had already been agreed upon. The President noted that this potential agreement would include the immediate and complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat. He emphasized that cancelling the attack was for the "future benefit of the world" and the survival of a prosperous Iran.

However, the situation remains highly uncertain. Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency quickly denied that Tehran had asked the U.S. to pause military action. According to BBC News, Iranian officials called the President’s claims "nothing but a new lie." Iran's acting Defence Minister, Majid Ibn al-Reza, stated that Tehran views threats from its adversaries as "real and credible." He added that Iranian forces remain on high alert and will not be caught off guard.

This development comes after a period of increasing tension in the region.
