Ukraine Launches Major Drone Attacks on Russian Oil Facilities

Ukraine has launched a significant wave of drone attacks against Russian oil terminals and port infrastructure near the city of St Petersburg. According to The Guardian, the overnight strikes targeted key energy facilities that help generate money for Russia’s war efforts. This latest action is part of a broader strategy by Ukraine to use long-range weapons to hit targets deep inside Russian territory, far from the main front lines.

Alexander Beglov, the governor of St Petersburg, confirmed that the city faced a large-scale attack on its oil terminal. He stated that there were no casualties and that local authorities had managed the situation. At the same time, the governor of the nearby Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, reported that a drone struck the area of Vysotsk port. This port is a vital hub that handles oil, coal, grain, and liquefied natural gas—a type of gas cooled into a liquid for easier transport. Drozdenko noted that while 72 drones were shot down across the region, some settlements suffered minor damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the operations, calling them a form of “long-range sanctions.” Sanctions are official penalties or restrictions placed on a country to force it to change its behavior. Zelenskyy explained that these strikes are intended to hit the infrastructure that supports Russia’s military funding. He also claimed that Ukrainian forces hit Kronstadt, a major naval base located over 850 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the impact of these strikes on energy facilities as “not critical,” and there has been no official confirmation from Moscow regarding the attack on the naval base.

Beyond the St Petersburg area, the conflict continues to spread. Reports from the Bryansk region and Russian-installed officials in Crimea indicate that drone strikes have resulted in one death in each location, with several other people wounded. Additionally, the governor of the Pskov region reported that over 30 drones were shot down, causing minor damage and injuries at a factory in the town of Velikiye Luki. These attacks are part of an ongoing trend this year where Ukraine has intensified its focus on Russian energy infrastructure, leading to heavy damage at refineries and causing petrol shortages in many parts of Russia.

While the drone strikes dominate the news in the north, the situation on the ground in eastern Ukraine remains highly contested. A major point of disagreement involves the city of Kostiantynivka. Russia’s military recently told President Putin that its forces had taken control of the city, which is a key part of Ukraine’s defensive line in the industrial Donetsk region. However, President Zelenskyy strongly denied these claims, calling them a “Russian lie” and an attempt to create a false story. He challenged the Russian president to visit the city if it were truly under Russian control, suggesting that such a meeting could be a way to find a diplomatic solution to the war.

Ukraine’s general staff supported the president’s position, stating that their military units continue to conduct defensive operations within Kostiantynivka and its surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry claimed that its forces had successfully taken control of five smaller villages in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions. These conflicting reports highlight the difficulty of verifying information in a fast-moving conflict where both sides use information as a tool to gain an advantage.

As the war enters this new phase, the strategy of targeting energy infrastructure appears to be a central part of Ukraine’s effort to weaken Russia’s economic capacity to fight. By hitting oil terminals and refineries, Ukraine aims to disrupt the flow of revenue that fuels the Russian military machine. Whether these long-range strikes will change the course of the war or lead to further escalations remains to be seen. For now, both nations remain locked in a dangerous standoff, with fighting continuing both in the air and on the ground across vast distances.
