US-Canada Trade Conflict Deepens as New Tariffs Announced

The trade conflict between the United States and Canada reached a new level of intensity this week. On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that he will increase tariffs — taxes on imported goods — on Canadian automobiles, trucks, and steel. Starting January 1, 2027, these goods will face a 50% tax. This move is a major escalation in a dispute that has already seen both countries impose new costs on each other’s products.

This announcement follows the collapse of trade negotiations late last week. According to BBC Business, the talks failed after both sides accused the other of making unreasonable demands at the last minute. The US had already imposed a 50% tax on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including electronics and sports equipment, which took effect over the weekend. US trade representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC that the US felt forced to act to protect American workers and supply chains after a year of what he called retaliation from its neighbor.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly criticized the American position. Speaking from Quebec, Carney described the US actions as an attempt to use economic integration as a weapon.
