Tragedy in Greece as Firefighting Helicopters Collide During Wildfire Crisis

A tragic accident occurred on Sunday as two firefighting helicopters collided in mid-air while battling large wildfires in Greece. The incident took place approximately 65 kilometers west of Athens, near the Psatha area. According to BBC News, the collision happened while the aircraft were working to control a fire burning on the border of the Attica and Boeotia regions.

Video footage of the event showed one of the helicopters hitting the propellers of the other. The damaged aircraft then caught fire and crashed into a ravine. The second helicopter managed to make an emergency landing in an area with low vegetation. The Greek fire service confirmed that the two crew members on the crashed helicopter—a Danish pilot and a Greek fire service liaison officer—were found unconscious and later pronounced dead. The two people on the second aircraft, a British pilot and another Greek coordinator, survived the crash with minor injuries. They were taken to a hospital for observation, as reported by BBC News.

This accident is a major setback for emergency teams currently facing what officials describe as a "titanic battle" against nature. The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, expressed his deep sadness over the loss of the crew members. Following the crash, authorities grounded all Bell helicopters across the country as part of standard safety protocol, according to information provided to the BBC. The British pilot involved was a private contractor hired for the wildfire season and was not part of an international aid exchange.

Greece is currently dealing with a series of intense wildfires that have forced mass evacuations. The situation has been made much worse by extreme weather conditions. According to The Guardian, gale-force winds—very strong winds—have pushed flames toward settlements on the western edges of Athens. These winds have reached speeds of over 125 kilometers per hour, making it extremely dangerous for firefighting aircraft to operate. The Greek civil protection minister, Evangelos Tournas, noted that the fire department has been pushed to its limits. He explained that the high winds make it difficult for aircraft to draw water or safely drop it on the fires due to extreme turbulence.

Beyond the capital, the wildfire crisis has affected many parts of the country, including the islands of Cephalonia and Crete, as well as the southern Peloponnese. In response to the growing threat, more than 500 firefighters and forest commandos have been working to keep the flames away from homes. This week has been particularly difficult for Greece, as three other firefighters have died in the line of duty in recent days. While most wildfires are started by humans, either by accident or on purpose, experts point out that climate change is creating conditions that make these fires more common and more dangerous. A mild, wet winter encouraged plants to grow, which then dried out during the recent heatwaves, creating large amounts of fuel for the fires. Additionally, authorities are investigating potential arson. Deutsche Welle (DW) reported that a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of deliberately starting a fire on the island of Cephalonia.

As the country continues to fight these blazes, officials are warning that the coming days will remain "extremely difficult." While other European nations like France and Spain have begun to contain their own major fires, the situation in Greece remains critical. The combination of dry land, high temperatures, and powerful winds continues to challenge the brave men and women working on the front lines.
