Uncertainty Remains Over New Gaza Peace Plan

A new peace plan for Gaza has become the center of international attention following recent comments by Donald Trump. The proposal aims to address two of the most difficult issues in the ongoing conflict: the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli military forces from the Gaza Strip. While the announcement suggests a possible path toward peace, significant questions remain about how and when these steps will actually happen.

According to The Guardian, Donald Trump claimed that Israel is happy with the new plan. However, the situation on the ground is far from clear. A major point of confusion is the sequence of events. It is currently unknown whether Hamas must give up its weapons first, or if Israeli troops must leave the area first. This lack of clarity has stalled the progress of a ceasefire—an agreement to stop fighting—that was originally discussed last October.

Representatives from Hamas have provided their own perspective on the deal. A member of the Hamas negotiating team, Ghazi Hamad, stated that the group is willing to hand over its weapons to a new organization called the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza. However, Hamad emphasized that this action is conditional. He explained that Hamas will not give up its weapons until Israeli troops have withdrawn from the territory. The group insists that the process must be fair and that Israel must also commit to ending its military attacks.

On the other side, the Israeli government has not yet officially accepted the agreement. Many Israeli officials have expressed doubt about the plan. One Israeli official noted that the country demands the complete disarmament of Hamas as a necessary first step before any other process can begin. This includes the removal of all weapons from the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, some Israeli leaders have described the current proposal as insufficient, arguing that it does not provide a satisfactory response to their security requirements.

There is also disagreement regarding who will oversee the transition. For example, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the national security minister, has already dismissed the plan as unacceptable. Meanwhile, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, stated that simple solutions will not work and that Hamas must truly lose its control over weapons before any progress can be made.
