North Korea Launches Missiles Following US Military Drill Cuts

North Korea launched about 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Thursday, according to South Korea’s military. The launches took place from the Pyongyang area and were directed toward the country’s eastern waters. This significant military action happened only one day after North Korea rejected a US decision to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea.

These missile tests are a direct challenge to international rules. South Korea’s presidential national security council held an emergency meeting following the event. In a statement, the council urged North Korea to stop these launches, which are banned under United Nations security council resolutions—official rules agreed upon by member countries to keep global peace. The Japanese prime minister’s office also confirmed that it had detected the suspected missile launches, showing the concern felt by neighboring countries.

Earlier this week, the United States and South Korea announced they were reducing their 11-day military exercises, known as the Ulchi Freedom Shield. US President Donald Trump had ordered the Pentagon to "substantially reduce" the exercises just before they began. According to The Guardian, President Trump explained that he made this decision because of his "good relationship" with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He also mentioned that South Korea had refused to support him in his ongoing war against Iran, which influenced his choice to change the military drills.

Despite the reduction in the size and length of the drills, North Korea’s reaction was not positive. Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of the North Korean leader, dismissed the US move. She stated that the "provocative, aggressive nature" of the drills would not change, even if they were smaller. According to NPR, she warned that if the US thinks it can call this move a sign of "good faith"—meaning honest and sincere intentions—it will not get the answer it wants from Pyongyang.

Kim Yo-jong also pointed to other military activities as reasons for North Korea's frustration. She highlighted a series of earlier drills carried out by the US and South Korea this year, as well as South Korea’s plan to introduce nuclear-powered submarines. However, she did not use the very angry language that North Korea sometimes uses. She noted that the personal relationship between her brother and President Trump was "still excellent." This suggests that North Korea might be waiting for the US to offer bigger rewards or changes before they agree to return to official talks.

President Trump remains optimistic about future meetings. On Wednesday, when reporters asked if he would meet with Kim Jong-un this year, the US president replied, "Yeah, I will be." While he did not say if they were currently exchanging letters, he insisted that he gets along well with the North Korean leader. This is a sharp contrast to the view from Pyongyang, where officials have denied Trump’s claim that Kim Jong-un responded to his request for a conversation.

North Korea has long described US-South Korea joint exercises as "invasion rehearsals," or practice for an attack. As reported by Deutsche Welle, the country often responds to these exercises by firing missiles. President Trump has called the war games "inappropriate and hostile," noting that they are expensive and send the wrong message to a country that he claims has been respectful toward him.

As the military exercises come to an end this Friday, the situation remains complicated. South Korea is currently working to improve its own military independence, a goal that has become more urgent following the recent changes to the US drills. While the US hopes that reducing military pressure will lead to a breakthrough in diplomacy, North Korea’s latest actions show that the path to peace is still very difficult. Both sides are now in a waiting game, with the world watching to see if the promised meeting between the two leaders will actually happen later this year.
