The United States is currently working to manage the largest recorded outbreak of cyclosporiasis in the country's history. This illness is caused by a tiny parasite that affects the stomach and intestines, leading to severe discomfort. While recent data from a major test-maker suggests that the number of new cases may finally be starting to fall, public health officials remain focused on finding the exact source of the contamination. In Washtenaw County, Michigan, public health nurses are playing a vital role in this effort. Linda Kim, a nurse at the local health department, has personally spoken to more than 100 people who have been sickened by the parasite since mid-June. During long phone interviews, investigators ask patients to open their grocery store apps, check their digital receipts, and even look at past orders from food delivery services. They ask very specific questions, such as the exact brand of bagged salad mix a person bought or whether they ordered a crunchy or soft taco at a restaurant. This level of detail is necessary to find patterns in the data and identify the contaminated food.

This work is a significant change from the tasks these nurses were performing just a few months ago. Earlier this year, Kim and her colleagues were focused on a measles outbreak, which required a different approach to contact tracing. During that time, some members of the public were suspicious of the health department, fearing that officials were trying to limit their personal freedom or gather private information. In contrast, the current response to the parasite outbreak has been different. Because the symptoms are so severe, many patients are now very willing to share detailed information about their health and their eating habits in hopes of stopping the spread of the illness.

Despite the dedication of these health workers, the investigation is happening during a difficult time for public health departments. According to NPR News, staff members have been working under the pressure of federal funding cuts for the past two years. These financial limitations make it harder for departments to maintain the necessary staffing levels for such large-scale investigations.
