US and Iran Peace Talks: A Deal Remains Uncertain

Prospects for an immediate end to the war between the United States and Iran remain uncertain as both sides continue to share conflicting information about ongoing negotiations. While some officials suggest that a final agreement is very close, others have expressed doubt, leading to a confusing situation for the rest of the world.

President Donald Trump recently appeared to move away from his earlier comments that a deal could be signed this weekend. In a series of social media posts, he described the Iranian side as difficult to work with and urged them to act quickly. This outburst followed reports from Iranian news agencies that denied the terms of a deal had been fully agreed upon. According to The Guardian, the president has repeatedly claimed a deal was near, only to follow those statements with new threats of military attacks against Iran.

Adding to the confusion, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, claimed on social media that a final text of a peace deal had been reached. However, neither Washington nor Tehran has officially confirmed that a final version exists. A senior US official, speaking anonymously, suggested there was an 80 to 85 percent chance of an agreement being signed within days. This official noted that while many people within the Iranian system want to sign the deal, internal disagreements are still being worked out. The official also mentioned that Iran would receive economic rewards, including the removal of sanctions — which are official punishments that stop trade to pressure a country — if they follow the rules of the agreement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that a deal has never been closer, but he warned the public to avoid guessing the details until the agreement is finished. He also claimed that Iran has emerged stronger from the conflict. According to Deutsche Welle, Araghchi explained that the current plan would end the US blockade of Iranian ports and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is extremely important because about 20 percent of the world’s oil supplies pass through it. However, Araghchi insisted that Iran would keep control over the area, a point that contradicts the US position that the strait must be open to free shipping.

NPR reports that this back-and-forth behavior from the US president has created a sense of uncertainty. For months, the war has caused global economic problems and pushed inflation — the rising cost of goods and services — to its highest level in years. Experts suggest that the president’s changing language makes it difficult for both allies and enemies to know what the US strategy really is. Even though the president has canceled planned military strikes, his frequent shifts between threats and peace talks have left many questioning the stability of the situation.

There are also significant disagreements regarding the scope of any potential deal. The Iranian Foreign Minister clarified that the current agreement would not address Iran’s nuclear program, stating that such issues would be discussed in later stages. Furthermore, while the deal might end the fighting in Lebanon, Araghchi said that this depends on Israel withdrawing from certain areas. Israel’s government has already rejected this idea, and Israeli officials have stated they are not a party to the proposed deal between the US and Iran.

As the situation continues to develop, the role of mediators like Pakistan remains critical. Prime Minister Sharif has called on all sides to ignore misinformation and focus on the final steps. Despite the optimism from some leaders, the reality on the ground remains tense. The US has threatened to seize key oil infrastructure, such as Kharg Island, if negotiations fail. Meanwhile, Iran continues to assert its sovereignty over its waters. With both nations still struggling to find a common path, the world waits to see if these negotiations will truly lead to a lasting peace or if the conflict will continue to escalate.
