Nurses Use Digital Data to Fight Large Parasite Outbreak

Public health officials in Michigan are working hard to manage the largest outbreak of cyclosporiasis in United States history. Cyclosporiasis is a serious intestinal illness caused by a tiny parasite. Since mid-June, more than 900 people in Washtenaw County alone have become sick, and reports across Michigan have reached more than 10,000 cases. While recent data from a major test-maker suggests the number of new cases might finally be starting to fall, the situation remains a significant challenge for local health departments.

Linda Kim, a public health nurse at the Washtenaw County Health Department, has been at the center of this effort. She has spoken to more than 100 patients to understand how the parasite is spreading. Tracking the source of this outbreak is difficult because of how the parasite works. Symptoms can take up to two weeks to appear after a person eats contaminated food. Because most people cannot remember exactly what they ate two weeks ago, nurses must use creative methods to find the truth. According to NPR Health, investigators now ask patients to look at their grocery store apps, check their digital restaurant receipts, and even identify the specific brand of salad mix they bought. By comparing this digital data, nurses hope to find a common link between the people who have become sick.

This work follows a busy year for local health departments. Earlier in 2026, Kim and her colleagues were responsible for managing a measles outbreak that affected seven people in the county. That experience was different, as many people were suspicious of the nurses and worried that the government was trying to control their lives. In contrast, people affected by the current parasite outbreak seem more willing to share information to help stop the spread of the illness. Kim noted that her goal is simply to contain the outbreak so it does not become a larger problem for the community.

These investigations are happening during a difficult time for public health funding. Laina Stebbins, a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, noted that federal funding cuts have made it harder to maintain these essential services. Despite these financial pressures, nurses continue to work long hours to protect the public. The process is slow and requires great attention to detail, as every small piece of information could be the key to identifying the source of the contamination.

Public health officials have previously linked many infections to iceberg lettuce imported from Mexico, but the investigation remains ongoing. While some data suggests that the outbreak might be slowing down, officials are not yet ready to declare victory.
