US Parasite Outbreak Grows as Officials Struggle with Funding Cuts

The United States is currently dealing with a massive outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes weeks of painful stomach issues, including watery diarrhea and vomiting. According to The Guardian, the current US administration cut $12 billion in public health funding in March 2025. These cuts affected laboratory capacity, disease monitoring, and the ability of local teams to investigate outbreaks. As a result, many state and local health departments have faced layoffs and hiring freezes. Natasha Bagdasarian, the chief medical executive in Michigan, noted that the federal government has provided less assistance during this outbreak than in past emergencies. She explained that the lack of support makes it harder to track the spread of the parasite and protect the public.

Reports indicate that the CDC has lost about one-third of its staff, and many top leadership roles remain empty. Susan Kansagra, an official with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (Astho), compared the situation to a sports team missing key players. She stated that while the impact of losing staff might not be obvious immediately, it eventually makes it impossible to manage multiple health threats at the same time. Despite the scale of the outbreak, the government's public messaging has been criticized for being unclear. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health secretary, spoke about the outbreak on a podcast, noting that there are often small outbreaks of this parasite during the summer. However, he did not mention that the current numbers are far higher than normal or that the investigation could lead to more recalls in the coming days. This lack of clear information has left many state officials feeling frustrated as they try to keep their communities safe.

For now, the FDA continues to monitor the situation. They have warned that because the investigation is still active, more brands, restaurants, or stores might be identified as having contaminated food. Taco Bell was the first major restaurant chain to stop serving certain produce in several states after federal warnings. As the investigation continues, experts expect that the number of reported cases will likely keep rising for at least another two weeks.
