US Parasite Outbreak Linked to Lettuce Grows as Health Officials Face Funding Challenges

The United States is currently facing one of the largest outbreaks of cyclosporiasis in its history. Cyclosporiasis is an illness caused by a parasite that lives in the stomach and intestines, leading to weeks of painful symptoms such as watery diarrhea and vomiting. While the country typically sees a few hundred cases each year, the current situation has seen numbers climb into the thousands, causing significant concern among doctors and public health experts.

As part of the ongoing effort to stop the spread, the producer Taylor Farms issued a recall on Friday for shredded iceberg lettuce distributed across 27 states. According to The Guardian, the company is removing the product because it may be contaminated with the parasite. The lettuce in question came from a facility in central Mexico. While the recall covers a wide area, the company did not name specific brands or stores, which makes it difficult for consumers to know if the food in their own kitchens is safe to eat.

Federal agencies, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are working to identify the full scope of the problem. The FDA noted that their investigation is still active, meaning more products or restaurants could be linked to the parasite in the coming days. Currently, the agency has warned against eating shredded iceberg lettuce from the affected facility that was served at Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Other major retailers, including Costco, Target, and Walmart, also carry products from the producer, though the full list of affected locations remains unclear.

State health departments are struggling to manage the crisis as they deal with a lack of resources. In Michigan, officials reported more than 5,000 cases of the illness, a sharp increase from previous days. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s chief medical executive, stated that this is likely the largest outbreak of its kind in US history. However, she also pointed out that communication from federal agencies has been slower than in past emergencies. According to The Guardian, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has lost about one-third of its staff, leaving many leadership positions empty during this critical time.

Experts suggest that the difficulty in managing this outbreak is directly connected to broader problems in the public health system. In March 2025, the US government cut $12 billion in public health funding. These cuts affected laboratory capacity, disease monitoring, and the ability of local teams to investigate outbreaks. Susan Kansagra, a leader at the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (Astho), compared the situation to a sports team missing key players. She explained that while you might not notice the loss of one person immediately, the impact eventually becomes clear when the team faces a difficult challenge. Because of these budget cuts, many states have seen layoffs and hiring freezes, leaving fewer people to track the spread of the parasite.

Adding to the challenge, millions of Americans have lost their health insurance coverage, which makes it harder for officials to track the true number of people who are sick. Even with these obstacles, health officials are urging the public to be careful. Because the parasite can take weeks to show symptoms, experts believe the country may see new cases for at least another two weeks. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health secretary, spoke about the outbreak on a podcast, noting that now that the likely source has been identified, it should be easier for people to make healthy choices. However, he did not mention that the investigation could uncover more contaminated products or that the current case numbers are much higher than normal.

For now, the advice for consumers is to stay informed about recall notices and to be aware that the investigation is still developing.
